Spearfish Canyon is well known for its beauty, hiking trails, views, and waterfalls! Most of these stunning waterfalls are easy to see from the road, others you will have to hike to find them. There are a multitude of waterfalls throughout the canyon. Getting there is easy, convincing yourself to leave is the hard part. Here we talk about the top must-see falls in the summer.
Roughlock Falls is one of the largely visited places in South Dakota. The trailhead leading up to the falls is located just beyond the Spearfish Canyon Lodge along FSR 222. The trail is roughly one mile from the falls, and is considered an easy trail which showcases plenty of breathtaking views, wildlife, and trout fishing. Take a break from your day to experience this beautiful place.
Bridal Veil Falls
Bridal Veil Falls is the easiest of the three waterfalls in Spearfish Canyon to locate as it can been seen from the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway (US Hwy 14A). This beautiful 60 ft. waterfall thinly veils the limestone and other rock layers like Victorian lace, which is where its name derives from. Spring is the best time to view this waterfall when its flowing flush with winter snow melts. Take a slow drive past this alluring waterfall, you won’t miss it!
The trail to this stunning 47 ft. waterfall starts at the parking lot for the Latchstring Restaurant and is roughly ¾ in length. There are two different paths to choose from when hiking to Spearfish Falls. The path to the left is easier, while the one to the right of the restaurant is more difficult but includes a sweet traverse over an old metal walking bridge. These falls are one of the lesser-known waterfalls that often gets passed by, but definitely one of the most charming!
