American Dippers are a very unique bird of the cold, fast streams in the Black Hills of South Dakota. American Dippers feed on insects found on stream bottoms, swimming underwater to depths of up to 20 feet and even walking on the stream bed. They often nest on the underside of bridges over mountain streams.  Local in the Black Hills only in South Dakota. Often referred to as an “indicator” species, due to its need for fairly pristine conditions. The presence of American Dippers generally infers very good water quality. They have declined through many parts of their range due to declines in water quality.
South Dakota “Hotspot”: The best bet to find an American Dipper in the state is Spearfish Creek in Spearfish Canyon. Try below Roughlock Falls, as there is typically a nesting pair just below the falls.

Mothers Day

Author: Linda

Mothers Day is May 9th Do you know how it started?

During the 17th century, those living on the British Isles initiated a religious celebration of motherhood, called Mothering Sunday, which was held on the forth Sunday during the Lenten season. This holiday featured the reunification of mothers and their children, separated when working class families had to send off their young children to be employed as house servants. On Mothering Sunday, the child servants were allowed to return home for the day to visit with their parents. The holiday’s popularity faded in the 19th century, only to be reincarnated during World War II when U.S. servicemen reintroduced the sentimental (and commercial) aspects of the celebration American counterpart.

Please remember your Mom on this day!
